Art Department announces Messiah Exhibition
The Bethany College Art Department will host the annual Juried Student Art Exhibition beginning April 3 as part of the 10-day long Messiah Festival of the Arts.
The Juried Student Art Exhibition runs through April 19 in the Mingenback Art Center Gallery on the Bethany College campus. An opening reception will be Sunday, April 9 at 1-3 p.m. with awards presentation at 1:30 p.m. and the Best of Show Award plaque will be presented prior to the Take 6 concert at 3 p.m. in Presser Hall on the Copley Stage. The student show is on exhibit weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Bethany College art students create all year long, anxiously awaiting the opportunity to show off their work and be juried into the exhibition during the Messiah Festival of the Arts. Students are allowed to enter up to three pieces of artwork in each medium category and must wait through spring break to find out if their artwork made it into the show. Jurors select artwork for this exhibition and decide on awards ranging from Merit Awards to Best of Show, with cash awards for the “Best of” in each category.
Juror for this year’s exhibition is Matt Garcia, assistant professor of digital/experimental media in the Department of Art at Kansas State University. Garcia’s artistic practice investigates ecology, its relationship to knowledge systems, and how art media can connect communities to a reclaiming or re-imaging of lost cultural philosophies. His work has been presented nationally and internationally.
In addition to experiencing him as a juror, Bethany art students will have an opportunity to interact and work with him during his solo exhibition in Mingenback Art Center in October 2017.
