Messiah Festival Hosts Lectures
The Messiah Festival of the Arts will host a series of lectures beginning Saturday, April 8 and continuing through next week. All lectures are open to the community and free of charge.
The lectures include:
- Categorical Ambiguity – Saturday, April 8, 4:30 p.m., Pearson Chapel – Art Professor Nelson Smith will share the ways that artists from the Fluxus art movement have incorporated chance, or “the unexpected,” into their creative process.
- Matthew’s Passion – Wednesday, April 12, 6 p.m., Pearson Chapel – Violinist Ruth Ann Leaf will explore the meaning behind, and the logistics of Johann Sebastian Bach’s choral masterpiece, “St. Matthew’s Passion.”
- The Reception of Christ’s Suffering in Art and Popular Culture – Friday, April 14, 6 p.m., Pearson Chapel – Religion faculty Arminta Fox and Tyler Atkinson will present a lecture exploring both the problem and the promise of various aesthetic depictions of Christ’s suffering, from late Roman antiquity to the present.
